  • Overview

From the stylish coastal resort of Portoroz, through the Slovenian Karst famed for its white Lippizaner horses, to the Old Town of Ljubljana, and on to the beautiful town of Bled and magnificent Lake Bohinj, Slovenia is perfect for two centre holidays or multi centres combining Istria or Venice.

Slovenia boasts marvellous contrasts. Along the northern Austrian border there’s an unspoilt alpine region with majestic snow-clad peaks, eerily silent lakes, magical fairy tale castles, magnificent valleys and river gorges, dense pine forests, delightful meadows, traditional villages and well-established spa resorts.

On the Adriatic, there’s the cosmopolitan beach resort of Portoroz, with its 100 year old spa tradition, and between the coast and the Alps, there’s the Slovenian Karst with more than 9,000 underground caverns and caves; the area renowned for its amazing Postojna and Skocjan caves, and famed white Lippizaner horses. The Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, is a Baroque town with a wonderful Old Town, vibrant nightlife, and plenty of history and culture.

    Activities

A paradise for nature lovers; hikers and cyclists will enjoy Slovenia’s alpine region especially Triglav National Park with its majestic peaks, dense forests, delightful meadows and beautiful Lake Bohinj. There are wonderful walks and way marked hiking including Soca river trail, Savica waterfall route, Vrata Valley and Pokljuka Gorge, plus Radovna cycling trail and serious mountaineering on Mount Triglav. Exhilarating rafting and canyoning is available on River Soca, and Bled is well placed for golf with seven different courses within an hour’s drive, and Bled Golf Course just 4km away in a fabulous setting. Coastal Portoroz features a large crescent shaped sandy beach with sailing, windsurfing and diving, plus land based activities including tennis, bowling, mini golf and go-karting.

    Cuisine

Slovenian cuisine is heavily influenced by its neighbours; Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, resulting in a great variety of flavours and the most popular local dishes tracing their roots to hearty, traditional fare. Seasonal locally sourced, often foraged, produce is popular and wild mushrooms are a national favourite although the main focus is meat, especially pork, plus game in season. To the west, Italian cooking styles are prevalent and risotto is a favourite, with fish and seafood popular along the coast. Desserts favour fruit and nuts in cakes and stuffed dumplings, plus there’s the famous Bled vanilla and cream cake, kremsnita. Slovenian wines are of a high standard, especially from the Goriska Brda region, pear brandy is the local tipple, and coffee is strong and black, Italian-style.
