  • Overview

La Manga del Mar Menor translated as the sandbar, or sleeve, of the minor sea, accurately describes the 22km long by 100m wide spit which separates the Mediterranean from the saltwater lagoon of Mar Menor, itself stretching from Cabo de Palos in the south to Punta del Mojón in the north.

Originally a bay open to the sea, volcanic reefs at either end gradually caused sand and sediment to be deposited, eventually forming an isthmus of dunes and long beaches although natural water channels, golas, continue to allow Mediterranean waters to flow into the lagoon. Interestingly, the large sheltered lagoon can be five degrees warmer than the Mediterranean Sea in summer and, because of the warm temperatures and due to high mineral concentrations in the salt pools, initial visitors were drawn to the area in the early 20th century.

The fascinating natural phenomenon of La Manga became a popular tourist resort in the 1960’s and now features one of Europe’s premier resorts boasting top class sports and leisure facilities.

Our featured property, Hotel Principe Felipe, is part of the well-renowned and prestigious year-round resort of La Manga Club. Popular with families, couples and groups, and covering an area of more than 18km, this whole resort is a sporting paradise as it features three championship-standard golf courses, an internationally celebrated tennis centre plus a plethora of land and water

based leisure and training activities including cycling and mountain-biking, sailing, windsurfing, and highly acclaimed children’s football coaching. And for those wanting rest and relaxation, there’s a superb spa, a private beach and beautifully landscaped grounds.
