  • Overview

The Bernese Oberland is Switzerland’s Alpine heart, and the stunning landscape of the Jungfrau may certainly cause yours to skip a beat. It was sufficiently uplifting to make Victorians swoon, presided over, as it is, by glacier-encrusted monoliths of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau; Ogre, Monk and Virgin.

    Grindelwald

A large village of narrow streets and picturesque chalets set among alpine meadows, picture-perfect Grindelwald lies at the foot of the dramatic ledges of the Eiger's sheer north face. To the left is the Mettenberg and the Wetterhorn Both surpassing 3,000m, these peaks are the most characteristic landmarks of the Grindelwald valley of which both sides are easily accessed by railway and cable cars. Additionally, there are two glaciers for exploring and there’s a small museum to learn about alpine life, local cheese-making, and the history of skiing and mountaineering. Grindelwald also offers a zip wire and a fantastic cliff walk. Thanks to the mountain railways, buses and cable cars, all linking, of course, with Swiss efficiency, the whole of the Bernese Oberland is extremely accessible from this delightful world-famous village.

    Interlaken

Interlaken is one of the most famous resorts of the Bernese Oberland and the classic starting point for exploring the region by train, bus or boat. Nestled between the sparkling waters of two beautiful lakes, Brienz, famous for its waterfalls, and Thun, feted for its fairy tale castles, between which flows the River Aare, the resort that is Interlaken offers impressive views up to the towering peaks of the Jungfrau massif. Hoheweg is pretty town’s main street, bookended by railway termini and lined with flowers, cafés and shops, it assumes the persona of an Alpine staging post, serendipitously placed to amuse and entertain visitors en route to the mountains. Lake steamers distract you to other villages along the shores. The historic Jungfrau railway can haul you to the highest railway station in Europe, Jungfraujoch. Adrenalin can be deployed abseiling, white water rafting and gliding, or there are numerous attractive boutiques, restaurants and cafés in which to idle away many hours.
