Gocek is regarded by sailing enthusiasts, not only as one of the most beautiful yachting areas in Turkey, but also in the whole Mediterranean basin. There has been much development around the waterfront since the 1980's and 1990's to serve the yachting crowd and emerging tourism, and the old village of Gocek, replete with mulberry trees, roaming sheepdogs and roosters, makes its presence felt 3km up from the seafront. The purpose-built town with its stylish hotels, chic restaurants and upmarket boutiques, is a world apart from old Gocek, whose hinterland is slowly being subsumed by the summer villas of wealthy Turks and Europeans.
