Lake Bled: Your perfect romantic getaway

Harry Cooke

Framed by the snow-capped mountains of the Julian Alps and overlooked by a medieval castle complete with turrets, Lake Bled could have been brought to life from the pages of a fairy tale. But like all good fairy tales, this too ends with a love story.

Over the years Lake Bled holidays have earned their reputation for being the ideal honeymoon retreat or romantic getaway for newlyweds and old romantics alike.

Bled Island

It is love at first sight as visitors gaze upon the emerald waters of Lake Bled with, at its centre, a little speck of land jutting out defiantly. The tiny island can be reached by cruising across the tranquil waters of Lake Bled by a short, and appropriately romantic, gondola ride. As you step onto Bled Island you are greeted by two wonderfully constructed pilgrimage churches, the larger of the two is beautifully decorated and adorned with Romanesque frescos, while the other is decorated in the traditional baroque design. To this day, both churches continue to offer religious succour and are more often than not, frequented by brides and grooms in search of sacred blessings to preserve their marriage. It is considered good luck to partake in an age-old tradition that involves the groom sweeping his bride into his arms and carrying her up the 99 steps that lead up the Assumption of Mary church, before ringing a bell and concluding the experience by making a wish.

Castle Bled

Look into the glacial waters of Lake Bled and you will be sure to see the reflection of the legendary Castle Bled, perched high upon the precipice on the mountain-side. Do not imagine some unforgiving gothic fortress befitting a Dracula horror film refit, but instead imagine a homely residence and once holiday home to the Yugoslav Royal Family. Castle Bled is your quintessential fairy tale renaissance style castle, accompanied with spiralling turrets and even a drawbridge that opens over its own moat. Visitors are invited to explore the castle and onsite museum, and to enjoy the unbeaten panoramic views over the lake, the city of Bled itself and beyond into the mountains.

Bled can be every bit of an active holiday as it can be a relaxing romantic getaway. With over 6 kilometres of shoreline and a lake surrounded by a sea of green of the encircling forests, it is no surprise are endless opportunities to sail, raft, canoe, bike, walk and even climb during your Bled visit.
