Feast and Refresh the Senses: Marrakech – Atlas Mountains

For two contrasting destinations, it can’t get much different than Marrakech and the High Atlas Mountains. Marrakech with its constant hum of activity and feast of flavours seems almost opposite to the silence and serenity to be found in the Atlas Mountains. Spend a few days exploring the scents and sites of bustling Marrakech, testing the senses, before hiding away in the Atlas Mountains to rejuvenate them.

Marrakech

Founded almost 1000 years ago, there is so much to discover in Marrakech, from historical sites such as the Saadian tombs and Ali Ben Youssef Medersa to the shopper’s delights in the seemingly infinite souks. Spice up your pantry with exotic spices or pick out the perfect carpet to add Moroccan style to your home; there really is a treasure trove of wonders to be uncovered. Feast the senses on the marvel that is Djemaa el Fna, where soothsayers, snake charmers and musicians all give the square a frenetic vibe. Simply relax with a fresh mint tea on a terrace for a retreat away from the bustle and indulge in a traditional Hammam to unravel the senses and rejuvenate the skin, before heading high in the mountains to escape it all.

Atlas Mountains

North Africa’s highest mountain range, the Atlas Mountains span 1000km diagonally across Morocco. Hidden within these peaks are lush, fertile valleys, hidden villages and traditional Berber settlements. Locally named ‘Idraren Draren’ (mountain of mountains), the Atlas Mountains are the ultimate in tranquillity. Breathe in the refreshing mountain air, savour the sounds of silence and take the time to utterly rejuvenate.

The town is aptly named in Arabic ‘Little Picture’, which comes to fruition when exploring cupboard sized shops with colourful fabrics and the delightfully charismatic harbour. Simply take in the languid atmosphere and beachy vibe and explore the palm lined avenues, brimming with art galleries, boutiques and divine restaurants. Don’t miss an evening at Caravanne Café with live performances of Gnaoui music, magicians or fire dancers…

Marrakech

Agadir

Well-loved for its year-round climate and over 10km of sandy beaches, Agadir appeals to couples, families and culture lovers alike. Amongst its credentials are a fashionable boulevard, golf courses and a plethora of beach and watersports. Due to an earthquake in 1960 much of the city was rebuilt, resulting in a modern, pristine and new appeal. However, several ruins of the original city remain, some dating back to the 16th century. Enjoy La Dolce Vita beachside, wind your way through gardens and parkland, indulging in shops and restaurants along the way.

Transfer options

The relatively new motorway between Marrakech and Agadir has reduced the journey time to three hours although you may like to upgrade to the scenic mountainous route (summer months only) which crosses the Atlas Mountains over the spectacular Tizi n’Test Pass, stopping for a lunch break in the walled city of Taroudant. Another year-round alternative transfer from Marrakech is via Essaouira, where you can stop to enjoy lunch, followed by the scenic coastal route to Agadir.

Practical Information

Getting around

Moroccan roads are well connected, meaning it’s easy to travel by car. There are high speed toll roads connecting the main cities and smaller roads in between can be incredibly scenic. We offer private transfers to get you to your destination in comfort, but for those who prefer to hire their own car, we’d be happy to help arrange this. Taxis are available in all cities and towns and bike hire is also available in major cities.

Best time to visit Morocco

The best time to visit Morocco is in spring and autumn when the weather is warm across the country, but not too scorching as the summer can be. Agadir tends to hold on to the sun for longer with winter temperatures of up to 25°C. The Atlas Mountains can be visited all year, although the winter months can be very cold. Marrakech is also warm all year round but can be too hot for comfort in July and August.
