  • Overview

Also known as Little Bristol, owing it its colonial trading links of the past, Speightstown is on the north west coast of Barbados in the parish of St Peter and 19km to the north of the island’s capital, Bridgetown. It is the island’s second city and, since its settlement in 1630, was Barbados’ first major port; it’s long and colourful history evident in the town’s numerous historic buildings which date back to early colonial times. Weekends are busy in Speightstown, when visitors and locals visit the shops and street-side stalls are set up with characterful, noisy hawkers selling local and imported fruits. As is often the case with second cities, Speightstown has been somewhat overlooked, but investment is now being made to remedy this neglect. Parts of the town are being refurbished, there is renewed interest in its architectural history and a brand new luxury marina, Port St Charles, has been developed.
