  • Overview

Confusingly the City of Hamilton, Bermuda’s capital, is not in Hamilton Parish, but in Pembroke Parish. Stretching from the Fairmont Hamilton Princess hotel in the west along Front Street and the waterfront to the east, the capital has a population of about 2,000 people.

The city’s Front Street West houses the island’s finest collection of shops, two-tiered pastel-coloured delights dotted with colonial columns and shaded verandas. Many of the shops are family businesses dating back to the mid nineteenth century. Although small, this busy metropolis offers narrow streets and labyrinthine arcades and alleyways teeming with shoppers and office workers, a lively ambience which spills over into the restaurants and clubs in the evenings. There’s a cathedral, City Hall, museums, galleries, the architectural paraphernalia of government and the picture post-card perfect Perot’s Post Office.

Harbour Nights offer street carnivals during the summer months in Front Street. Holidays in the City of Hamilton are not complete without sampling the luxury of a horse drawn carriage, available for hire all year-round. And with good value eateries such as Hog Penny and Pickled Onion, amongst many others, what’s not to like.
