• Luxury Guanacaste Holidays
  • Overview

Located in the north west of Costa Rica and bordering the Pacific Ocean, Guanacaste neighbours Nicaragua, of which it was once part, and as a result the region offers a slightly different personality to the rest of country. It is also the least populous of Costa Rica’s provinces and is named after the Guanacaste tree, or ear-pod tree, the country’s national tree. The climate in Guanacaste is drier and hotter than elsewhere in Costa Rica, particularly from November to April.

To the east there are fascinating national parks and the calderas of ancient volcanoes swathed in tropical dry forests. To the west you’ll discover some of the country’s finest white sand beaches which are superb for catching the Pacific surf. Here, sleepy fishing villages have been transformed into popular holiday resorts such as Tamarindo. In between the coast and the volcanoes are rivers, rolling flatlands, and lowland mountain forests home to toucans, iguanas, sloths and monkeys. Liberia is the area’s administrative capital and home to the nation’s second international airport.

Visitors to the region are drawn to the beaches for surfing and snorkelling, and to dip into the nightlife of Tamarindo. Whilst here it’s easy to explore the national parks, visit waterfalls and enjoy hiking on the slopes of volcanoes.
