Founded in AD295 on the Adriatic’s shores by Roman emperor Diocletian, Croatia’s second city, Split, has a sprawling centre with its core housed within the protective walls of the two thousand year old Diocletian’s Palace; a UNESCO World Heritage site simply bursting with historic monuments, chic bars, sophisticated cafés and elegant boutiques. Also encircled by the walls is majestic Cathedral of St Domnius whose belfry affords magnificent views over the city, and a colonnaded sunken square called the Peristyle; itself home to a delightful café.
Split is a modern, thriving port, renowned for its vibrant nightlife especially at the waterfront bars and clubs, and during July and August the celebrated Split Summer Festival features a wonderful music, opera and theatre programme. The wide pedestrianised seafront boulevard, the Riva, is lined with pavement cafés, and beaches in the area include the sandy Bacvice and the pebbled Kasjuni, plus there’s easy access to many Dalmatian Islands, of which Hvar and Brac especially are great for twin centre holidays.
