Explore Oleggio Castello

The little town of Oleggio Castello, which lies in the hills to the south of Lake Maggiore against the magnificent backdrop of the Monte Rosa mountains, possesses a number of features of historical importance. A major visitor attraction is the Oleggio Castello watermill, a symbol of the rural economy which for centuries characterised this fertile area. There are three man-made waterfalls, and you can still see the wheels that turned the grindstones to produce the flour. A visit to the parochial church of San Martino affords time for quiet contemplation and some quite splendid panoramic views.

In the nineteenth century this area of Lake Maggiore was frequented by European aristocracy and today the romantic charm of its past is still evident. The style and substance of the local architecture and private parks, reflecting the elegance of the Neo-Gothic era, are located between the shimmering blue of the lake and the luxuriantly green Vergante hills. The landscape is a stunning backdrop to the history of the Visconti, Borromeo, Pallavicino and Dal Pozzo families in this typically authentic corner of Italy.
