  • Overview

Small and elegant, well-to-do Parma is noted for its gastronomy and world renowned produce, its rich history, architectural masterpieces and for its links to the composer Giuseppe Verdi, the conductor Arturo Toscanini and the typographer Bodoni, as well as great painters and poets.

Refined Parma is a prosperous university city in the verdant Emilia-Romagna region and lies between Bologna and Milan; both can easily be reached in around an hour by highspeed train.

Gastronomy plays an important part and in 2015 Parma was awarded the UNESCO City of Gastronomy for its outstanding products and the city has some excellent restaurants making the most of the local produce.

There’s great shopping, café filled piazzas and a historic centre with a 12th century Duomo and a striking pink-marble baptistery, plus modern architecture by Renzo Piano, and in addition, the surrounding area is scattered with castles from the 14th and 15th century. Parma is ideal for city break, or twinned with Bologna, or with one of our featured seaside resorts on the Adriatic Riviera.

    Gastronomy

The province is known the world over for its Parma ham and Parmesan cheese and there are a myriad of museums and tours relating to food and wine, or even ‘flavour itineraries’ into the surrounding province, discovering cheeses, cured meats, wine, truffles and porcini mushrooms. A seasonal menu may include tortelli d'erbetta pasta, a rice bomb or gnocchi as a first course, slowly boiled beef and chicken, tripe or stuffed veal as a second course, whilst torta fritta, small triangles of fried dough, is a local favourite to accompany cured ham and meats.

    When to visit

Anytime of year is perfect for a visit; spring is delightfully warm, although the height of summer can reach 30C, and autumn is a lively time with the annual Verdi festival in October and the Palio, a weekend of merriment, pageantry and historic races through the town, in September.
