  • Overview

Gallipoli is the Italian form of a Greek word meaning ‘beautiful city’. Located on the west coast of Puglia’s Salento peninsula, the city lives true to its name, with its historic centre and brilliantly blue waters giving the city many breath-taking views.

The ‘Old Town’, located on a small island connected to the mainland by a 17th Century bridge, offers visitors a beautiful and unique area to wander round. The city also caters for beach lovers, its brilliantly blue waters embracing the wide sandy beach, La Spiaggia della Purita. In summer, the cafes and restaurants spill out onto the pavements enthusing the area with a warm friendly atmosphere.

The city, virtually surrounded by defensive walls, is home to a member of Baroque churches, cathedrals and aristocratic palazzi. The Basilica Cattedrale di Sant’Agata is one such cathedral, which illustrates the town’s former wealth as a trading port. Situated in a small piazzo in the old city, the surrounding cafes and bars provide a place to rest and, if lucky, watch a wedding take place within the Cathedral.
