• Zafferana Etnea
  • Overview

Surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape, and shaded by tall chestnut trees, Zafferana Etnea has long been considered a fashionable resort owing to its cooler summer evening temperatures and particularly busy autumn events of the town’s amphitheatre. It lies on a spectacular lava slope balcony overlooking the eastern slope of the volcano, directly on the coast of the Ionian Sea. Nestled between the mountains and sea, the town is the launch point to discover the volcano, with roads and trails leading into the national park. The bronze doors of the town’s cathedral depict a scene from the eruption of Mount Etna in 1792. It’s history is much older, dating as far back as 1378 with the establishment of a Benedictine monastery.

The name of the town name derives from what was once an important income source, saffron; a painting in the main church depicts a vase of crocus flowers, from which saffron is painstakingly hand-harvested. The Church of Santa Maria della Providenza is dedicated to the town's patron saint. This impressive building was constructed in the 1700’s and the bronze doors depict a scene from the eruption of Mount Etna in 1792. The Municipal Palace, flanked by palms and pines, is a Liberty style villa that houses the town hall.
