  • Overview

Traditionally a port city, located on Kenya’s east coast, Malindi was for centuries a colonial trading post. It has played host to an impressive array of explorers over the centuries, most famously Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese adventurer, who came in 1498 and received such a warm welcome he left a coral column in thanks. It is there still.

Today’s visitors are mainly tourists, who also enjoy Malindi’s hospitality not to mention its tropical beaches, gorgeous scenery and luxurious accommodation. Culturally diverse, like its southern neighbour Mombasa, it has a thriving Italian community and delicious dishes such as specialities from Sicily give the local cuisine a distinctive flavour.

Malindi’s Marine National Park, the oldest in Kenya, is a watery haven for sea cucumbers, jewel-bright fish, sea urchins and other creatures. A highlight of any holiday is a trip on a glass-bottomed boat where you might spot turtles – or even whale sharks.
