    Explore Mombasa

    Set on Kenya's east coast, Mombasa is a busy coastal city and was an important port in the colonial era. Energetic and cosmopolitan, it has numerous beachfront hotels, along with shops, bars and restaurants. There's even a spice market, where the air hangs heavy with aromas such as cardamom, pepper and turmeric.

    Older than the capital Nairobi, and with a long history, Mombasa frequently attracts those looking for some sea and surf as a finale to a safari. It is certainly popular with party animals, who love its lively nightclubs where you can dance until dawn.

    There are plenty of cultural attractions too, notably Fort Jesus which is well worth exploring. It was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and changed hands time and again until it ended up as a British prison. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fort's thick stone walls are etched with ancient graffiti.
