    Home to the county's capital, Port Louis, the west coast is scattered with a mix of beach resorts, Creole villages and beautiful landscapes. The coast with the most African influence is a family favourite owing to its calm and shallow waters. Known also as the sunset coast, the former fishing village turned popular resort, Flic and Flac, is regarded as one of the best places to watch the setting sun. Or head to Tamarin, a small fishing village located close to Tamarin mountain. This is mostly residential with a small number of hotels and trendy eateries. It's also for the early morning arrival of dolphins into the bay.

    One of the most picturesque villages is Chamarel, named after Antoine Regis Chazal de Chamarel, a French army captain. Located close to the Black River Gorges National Park, this quiet village is the site of the islands only coffee production. The Seven Coloured Earth is a mesmerising multi-coloured sand dune best seen at sunrise or sunset. The Chamarel Waterfalls are part of a breath-taking and Jurassic landscape that so many visitors do not see.
