• Luxury Cancun Holidays
  • Overview

To Mexico’s ancient history and civilisation, Cancun offers a stimulating contrast. On the north eastern tip of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, Cancun is as vibrant as it is modern, and the sort of city for which the phrase location, location, location might have been invented. Enjoying the most splendid position overlooking the beautifully clear waters of the warm Caribbean Sea, the coastline threads itself around Cancun in a twenty kilometre long, white-gold ribbon of sand, where secluded bays seamlessly merge into lively resort beaches. For those who tire of sunbathing, a luxury holiday to Cancun offers plentiful opportunities for diving, snorkelling and sailing.

    Entertainment

Formerly a small Yucatan fishing village, Cancun has grown into a thriving holiday resort, with plenty of space for its many sun-worshipping visitors. Away from the resort’s three primary attractions of sun, sand and sea, there are seductively sleek shopping malls and some quite simply superb restaurants; in Mexico, Mexican food is a revelation. There are also highly regarded championship golf courses and plenty of entertainment for the children.

    Ancient culture

Beyond Cancun, the Yucatan peninsula is rich in Mayan history. There are the ancient ruins and small temple of El Ray. The Museo Maya de Cancún is a world-class facility featuring no fewer than four hundred fascinating artefacts. It neighbours the archaeological site of San Miguelito. Further afield, to the south of Cancun, is the ancient and romantic sea port of Tulum, famous for its magnificently dramatic pyramid, and attendant buildings, which are set against the town’s spectacular scenery and beautiful coastline. Indulge in cave and cavern diving or traditional massages. Venture into Tulum's surrounding area to visit the Sian Kaan Biosphere reserve, Punta Allen’s secluded fishing village and the ruins of Coba.

    Cuisine

Yucatan is home to some of Mexico’s most iconic food. There’s cochinita pibil a sublime concoction of slow-roasted pork marinated in peppery achiote and orange juice. Panuchos, bean-filled fried tortilla snacks, might be more familiar, but no less tasty, as are the homemade salsa and sauces. Given the close proximity of the Caribbean, it’s no surprise that the finest quality fresh fish and seafood add another aspect to what is a very varied dining experience. From the thatched roof palapa shacks and humble café-like taquerias to Michelin starred establishments, dining out can be an endless and very satisfying adventure.

    Nightlife

State of the art light shows, DJs, acrobats and impersonators are all part of an exhilarating club scene. For more traditional pursuits with a local flavour, try an evening of flamenco, cabaret and Mexican dance in local bars, cafes and restaurants. Notably popular are the Hard Rock Café, hard to miss with its oversized electric guitar, and the Coco Bongo nightspot, mixing rock-star energy, cosmic lights with euphoric Cirque du Soleil acrobatics, and music for up to 1800 revellers. Anything can happen and often does.

    Outdoors

Mexicans love the outdoor life. Diving and snorkelling are a given, but enhanced by underwater sculpture museums, and ocean dives which can introduce you to fascinating underwater cave systems and limestone sink holes. Those enthused by the natural environment on land can enjoy rambling, hiking and bird-watching activities on uninhabited islands. There’s always the looming presence of the beach, where you can swim, kayak and kiteboard to your heart’s content.
