  • Overview

Luxury holidays to Riviera Maya centre around an enclave of luxury hotels built with the discerning traveller firmly in mind. A holiday to Riviera Maya will find you cocooned within the welcoming luxury of five star resort hotels where every whim is catered for, and never far from an excellent championship golf course or one of the world’s top dive spots. With a fabulous year-round climate, this is a fly and flop destination par excellence, especially for families, who are spoilt for choice between pools, freshwater sink holes and mammoth adventure and water parks.

    Beaches

Riviera Maya stretches for some 120 kilometres along the Caribbean coastline of the Yucatan peninsula. Glorious, powdery and fine, white sand beaches - some of the finest to be found anywhere in the world - run the whole length of the coast, parallel to Highway 307, from the popular resort of Cancun in the north to more modest town of Tulum in the south. Completing this picture perfect holiday paradise are the beautiful blue and turquoise hues of the warm Caribbean sea and the presence of the world’s second largest coral reef just a short distance offshore.

    Culture

For a glimpse of the real Mexico, the area is home to many vestiges of a Mayan culture which thrived in Yucatan from the fourth to the thirteenth century. Some astounding ancient ruins are easily visited, including the jungle-buried delights of Coba and those perched high above the beach in delightful and authentic Tulum. Slightly further afield and inland, Chichen Itza rewards its visitors with one of the finest preserved marvels of the Mayan world. It’s home to a charming colonial city, and its monumental temples and colossal Pyramid of Kukulcan was recently voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

    Entertainment

Riviera Maya’s main resort, Playa del Carmen, is almost exactly midway between Cancun and Tulum. It’s a recent enough development for local people to remember the tiny village it once was. Now it is home to hotels, golf courses and expensive real estate belonging to well-heeled retirees. Playa del Carmen’s Mamitas beach is the haunt of Mexican high society, and nearby Quinta Avenida features restaurants, cafes, designer boutiques and shaded patios filled with exotic trees and plants. Nearby Cozumel Island is one of the world's top dive destinations.
