Alcazaba

Visit the magnificent Alcazaba. Constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries, this fortified palace of Muslim governors is a wonderful testament to the talented creators of Moorish and Arab architecture. Built upon the remains of an old Phoenician fortress, the palace consists of intricately carved archways, charming fountains and attractive gardens. Walk along well maintained pathways to the Alcazaba and then up a steep mountain pathway to the castle of Gibralfaro. It is recommended this walk is done in the cooler parts of the day and with walking boots for added support and comfort.

Roman Theatre

Built in the 1st century A.D, this Roman Theatre was in use until the 3rd century. Now a museum, the theatre offers a scenic space to explore and learn more about the areas rich history.

Cathedral

Started during the gothic period in the 16th Century, Malaga Cathedral was erected upon the old mosque of the Arabian city. Following Renaissance architectural traditions, the cathedral’s magnificent external architecture is only outdone by its spectacular interior design. Bestowed the popular name of “La Manquita” (the One-Armed Lady), the cathedral is yet to be finished and is missing its south tower.

Carmen Thyssen Museum

Indulge your inner artist at the Carmen Thyssen Museum, located in the Palace of Villalon. Holding within its walls over 200 works by 19th century Spanish artists, this is the ideal location to escape the heat of the day and appreciate the superb artistic feats.

Malaga Picasso Museum

Displaying over 200 works of art by Pablo Ruiz Picasso, donated by the members of his family, this museum offers an exceptional look into the artistic talents of Picasso and how his work developed during his life-time. Ideal for art enthusiasts or anyone wishing to marvel at the work of a man who has become a household name.

Plaza de la Merced

Centred around a striking obelisk that acts as a monument to the Torrijos, the square is said to be one of the most beautiful squares in the city. With links to a number of talented painters, including Picasso, the square has now become a social space with plenty of restaurants and cafes to tempt all who visit.

Malaga Park

Escape the buzz of the city and explore the 33 hectare city green space. With an array of botanical gardens, fountains and sculptures, the park is an oasis of calm where visitors can relax and enjoy the scenery.

Malaga in 3 days:

To help you get the most out of the fascinating city of Malaga we have put together a ‘Malaga in 3 days’ itinerary.

Day 1:

Known for being the city of Museums, there is a fantastic offer of international works of art to enjoy. Spend the day visiting the Malaga Picasso Museum, Picasso’s Birthplace (artit’s House Foundation) and the Carmen Thyssen Museum. When hungry indulge in tapas in any corner of the historic centre and after, enjoy shopping in popular areas such as Calle Larios, Calle Nueva and Calle Granada. To end the day you can view Malaga’s monumental skyline from the terraces of Muelle Uno.

Day 2:

Spend your second day investigating the thousand year old charms of the city. Malaga was founded by the Phoenicians 3,000 years ago and today contains a cultural heritage and historical legacy that is a delight for all who visit. You can explore the Renaissance masterpiece that is Malaga’s Cathedral, enjoy the Arab architecture of the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro castle, a must for lovers of photography from where we can enjoy the best views of the city. For spectacular fish dishes, jump on bus line 11 or 34 and journey to the sunny promenade of Pedregalejo, located in the old and picturesque fisherman’s quarter. Try the delicious dish known as Espetos, sardines roasted in a boat full of sand, which is a popular dish in Malaga. End the day with a visit to the impressive and beautiful art collection at the Museum of Russian Art in St. Petersburg by taking the 15 or 16 line bus.

Day 3:

For your last day, take a bike ride through the city. Glide along the expansive promenade and feel the cooling sea breeze against your skin. Visit the modern art centre located at Muelle Uno in Pompidou, then take the city hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus to the Botanical Garden of La Concepcion, Europe’s largest botanical garden with plants from 5 continents. To eat, there are a range of fantastic downtown restaurants serving traditional food with the best wines of the region. Then spend the evening on one of the cities outdoor terraces, enjoying a drink while gazing down at the city illuminated below.
