  • Overview

Sweden’s elegant waterfront capital, Stockholm, commands a beautiful setting where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. A dynamic, ever changing city it encompasses an impeccably preserved medieval core as well as modern, effortlessly stylish Scandinavian design, delicious Nordic cuisine and wonderful parks and gardens.

Culturally and historically rich its pedestrianised old town is one of the best preserved in Europe, its Royal Palace one of the largest and its neighbourhoods all offer their own history and characteristics. The hilly, and today very trendy, Södermalm, boasts the best views and an artsy vibe where traditional working class cottages jostle for space with fusion restaurants, popular bars and quirky vintage stores. Prestigious Östermalm attracts visitors with its fabulous gourmet market hall, Östermalms Saluhall and fashionable shopping at Sturegallerian, whilst Gamla Stan, the Old Town, is utterly charming and magical. Residential Vasastan offers neo-renaissance architecture and Djurgården, the city’s museum island and vast green space, is easily explored on foot or by bicycle.

    When to visit

Although sightseeing is great year-round, spring and autumn is less busy. Summers are pleasantly warm with long days and light evenings allowing for a laid-back outdoor lifestyle; there are urban beaches and lidos for the hottest days in the height of summer. In winter, temperatures drop below freezing and there is very often snow making the capital seem especially magical and festive; a good time for Christmas markets.
