  • Overview

Dominated by the unmistakeable peak of the Matterhorn, charming Zermatt is surrounded by marvellous scenery and encircled by some of Europe’s highest mountains and glaciers. Easy walks through flower-filled meadows and wooded slopes reward with fabulous vistas; cable cars and cogwheel trains take you higher.

Since the mid-19th century, Zermatt has acquired a reputation as one of Switzerland’s plushest resorts. British mountaineer, Edward Whymper, first blazed the trail, reaching the top of the Matterhorn in 1865. Theodore Roosevelt followed in his footsteps 16 years later. And 13 years after him, Winston Churchill scaled the neighbouring, slightly higher, Monte Rosa. The pretty old town of Zermatt features quaint narrow streets full of colourful blooms, typified by Hinterdorfstrasse, Zermatt's oldest surviving street, and traditional 16th century wooden houses which, to maintain an unassailable distance between grain stores and rodents, were built on stilts. Nowadays it’s a car-free village where Lilliputian electric buses carry people between train station and cable car terminus, and cyclists on e-bikes share space with horse-drawn carriages. There are vibrant cafés, designer boutiques, many traditional shops and a museum dedicated to Zermatt’s mountaineering past. The mountain train and cable cars give wonderful views of the Matterhorn and breath taking panoramas of all the spectacular peaks.
