Malta's diminutive capital, the smallest in Europe, is an UNESCO World Heritage site and has been elected European Capital of Culture for 2018. Although its footprint covers just one square kilometre Valletta is an architectural jewel of a place, strewn with Baroque and Medieval architecture, and wonderfully photogenic.
There are churches, museums and palaces packed within its tiny, narrow streets as befits one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world. The city offers impressive Grand Harbour views to the southeast and Marsamxett Harbour to the northwest.
