The luxurious villas of Zanzibar White Sand are dotted about the sprawling grounds of the resort and overlook the pristine, palm-fringed beach at Paje and the Indian Ocean. This is barefoot luxury in a resort that blends perfectly with its natural surroundings.
Most of the guest villas here are located on large seafront plots. Each has a private plunge pool, garden and a dining area in which meals can be organised by the resort’s in-house butlers. The rooms are vast and feature wooden furniture made by local carpenters and floor to ceiling windows. Bathrooms offer wonderful downpour showers. In keeping with the eco-friendly ethos of the resort there is much recycling of materials including the use of whole irregular tree trunks and branches for the handrails and canopies.
The cuisine sees healthy ingredients prepared with African flair. The fish and seafood dishes are outstandingly fresh, as is the barbecued Tanzanian beef. Eat in the main restaurant, enjoy a buffet by the pool, or dine in the privacy of your own villa. The roof top champagne bar, where telescopes are installed for late night stargazing, is the best place from which to enjoy the island’s sunset.
There are two large pools, set back from the beach, and a very well equipped outdoor gym. The enticing spa is made up of circular huts set around landscaped pools. Treatments use locally sourced products such as coconut, seaweed and organically grown herbs and spices from the resort’s garden.
The stretch of beach here is popular with kite surfers and the resort’s water sports centre offers fishing snorkelling and scuba diving. The hotel also has a gift shop selling sarongs, kangas and jewellery.
