Day 1– Flying from the UK to San José, Costa Rica

Depart from the UK on a morning flight to Costa Rica arriving in the afternoon. Be met by our English-speaking representative and transfer to your lodge in Bajos del Toro, around a two hour drive away. You will be staying in stylish, contemporary comfort at a secluded luxury eco-lodge for the next three nights on a bed and breakfast basis. Set in a 500-acre private cloud forest reserve the views are splendid, the service attentive and the experiences unforgettable. Stay at El Silencio Lodge & Spa for 3 nights.

Days 2 & 3 – Bajos del Toro

Off the beaten-track Bajos del Toro is a tiny rural town tucked away in a valley between extinct volcanoes in Costa Rica’s Alajuela province. Known for its scenic beauty of lush mountains, clear water rivers, magnificent waterfalls, secluded paths and a cloud forest, this peaceful, agricultural town offers an insight into daily life and culture of Costa Rica. Complimentary tours from the hotel include planting a tree to leave a living legacy and to aid the return of the beautiful Quetzal bird to the area. A mystic hike with your Eco-Concierge guiding you on an hour and half walk through the grounds is also included; see the magical knot garden, trod the hidden paths and delight in the hummingbird garden. Optional tours include a half day cultural tour of the town including a visit to Don Martin Porras extraordinary orchid garden, or you could take part in a wine tasting session at the lodge, or learn to cook some of the country’s hearty dishes, prices on request.

Day 4 – Bajos del Toro to Arenal

After breakfast leave on a 90km drive to La Fortuna in the Northern region where you will stay at the acclaimed Arenal Nayara Resort & Gardens for three nights. This resort offers an authentic rainforest experience in the heart of the Arenal Volcano National Park along with impeccable service, luxurious accommodation and fine facilities; you can take part in a daily yoga class and an early morning birdwatching tour each day. You can spend the day at leisure today or there are several optional* tours available including a stand up paddle tour on Lake Arenal and an educational tour to learn about coffee and chocolate. For the more adventurous, the Sky Tram & Trek will transport you by gondola high above the rainforest before sending you through the treetops on a zip line, whilst Arenal Sky River Drift will see you soar above the tree canopy along zipwires and drift along the Piedras Negras River on an individual raft, carried by the current along a series of rapids and drops. *Prices for optional tours on request. Day 5 Arenal

Venture in to the tropical forest of the Arenal Volcano National Park for an easy 2km hike alongside a local guide. Discover a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as impacted craters and lava fields and, on clear days, you can enjoy views of the impressive Arenal Volcano, the Arenal Lake and Tilaran mountain range. After your hike, the Tabacon natural hot springs await; relax in the various pools and their healing mineral waters. Afterwards enjoy dinner (included) at the Tabacon Hot Springs before returning to your hotel.

Day 6Arenal

After breakfast at the hotel you will head for the Hanging Bridges wildlife sanctuary for a leisurely 3km natural history walk through the primary rainforest, guided by a knowledgeable naturalist. Make your way along trails and suspension bridges built in harmony with nature allowing for total immersion in the diverse flora and fauna, with numerous colourful birds, howler monkeys and lizards amongst those most commonly spotted.

Day 7 Arenal to Turrialba

Leave Arenal on a 150km, around a 3 hour, drive to Turrialba and your luxury eco-lodge for the next two nights on a full board basis. This unique lodge offers a mere 20 suites and sits deep inside a protected zone on the banks of the scenic Pacuare River and you can choose to arrive by exciting white-water raft, or 4×4 vehicle, from Guapiles, the lodge’s meeting point. The lodge enjoys the most perfect setting for exploring the rainforest and experiencing the jaw-dropping beauty of the area’s natural scenery through a variety of excursions shared with other guests staying here. Stay at Pacuare Lodge for 2 nights.

Day 8 Turrialba

Start the day with a delicious breakfast and choose the day’s programme. There is a choice of eight excursions including a canyoning tour, a zipline adventure through the tree canopy, a challenging hike to meet an indigenous Cabecar family in the Talamanca Mountains to learn about their culture, as well as a very challenging trek to a hidden waterfall along an ancient trail. You can also opt for something a bit easier with a sustainable tour of the lodge, a visit to a rural village or a walk with a naturalist guide learning about the exotic birds and endemic flora in the protected reserve.

Day 9 – Turrialba to San José

After rafting out, (4×4) of Pacuare Lodge transfer to San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital. On arrival check in to your hotel and you can  spend the rest of the day independently exploring the city and its history and culture. Don’t miss the Central Market for delicious Costa Rican food and the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and National Museum are worth a stop. Stay at Hotel Grano de Oro on bed and breakfast.

Day 10 – San José to Osa Peninsula

Following breakfast head to the airport for your 50 minute internal flight to the Osa Peninsula, considered one of the most biodiverse places in the world. On arrival you will be met and escorted on a picturesque 30 minute boat ride to your beachfront boutique hotel set in a private rainforest in the Piedras Blancas National Park. Your home for three nights this eco-luxury lodge is an intimate retreat in harmony with its magnificent natural surroundings and offers personalised service, comfortable accommodation and gourmet dining. Stay at Playa Cativo Lodge on a full board basis.

Days 11-12 – Osa Peninsula

You can choose to spend your time relaxing, making use of the facilities at the lodge or choose an optional excursion. There is an outdoor pool, a wellness spa and complimentary use of kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and snorkelling equipment. Make your way along the beautiful coastline in a kayak or on a stand up paddle board and encounter plenty of fish, manta rays, turtles and dolphins in the crystal clear waters, or go snorkelling; the helpful staff will point out the best places. You could also discover the area’s flora and fauna independently along the hotel’s user-friendly network of trails. In addition there are some shared, optional tours* available, including a boat tour, a dolphin and whale sightseeing trip and national park hike with a naturalist guide. * Prices on request for optional tours.

Day 13 – Return to UK

After breakfast transfer to the airstrip for your internal flight to San José airport and your overnight return flight to the UK arriving the following day.
