Trekking through the amazing Corcovado National Park on the remote Osa Peninsula for the best chance of spotting Costa Rica’s wildlife. Search for sloths dangling from trees and white-lipped peccaries, wild hogs, moving through the rainforest in large herds, as well as Baird’s tapir, anteaters, monkeys, scarlet macaws and toucans, crocodiles, sea turtles and frogs, and over 10,000 insect species.

Leave early morning after breakfast for a full day at the truly remarkable Corcovado National Park. This untouched and remote national park has been described by National Geographic as ‘the most biologically intense place on Earth’ and is one of the largest lowland tropical forests in Central America. Spanning a considerable area of the Osa Peninsula it’s an awe-inspiring destination. Your hike will take you through the lush rainforest where you have the chance of spotting all four species of Costa Rica’s monkeys; the white-headed capuchin, the mantled howler, the endangered Geoffroy’s spider monkey, and the Central American squirrel monkey. The park is also home to big cats including jaguarundi, puma, ocelot, margay, and the endangered jaguar, although these are rarely seen during daytime. Further animals to look out for include sloths, coatis, racoons and tapirs and a variety of birds and lizards. To reach Corcovado you will travel by boat and if lucky may encounter whales, dolphins, turtles and seabirds along the route.

Leave Dominical after breakfast for the two hour drive to the remote village of San Gerardo de Dota in the Central Valley where you will base yourself for the next two nights. Here you will stay in a simple yet comfortable family run lodge where you will be able to relax and take in the natural surroundings and enjoy walks through the forest. Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge is located near the border of Costa Rica and Nicaragua and considered one of the most important wetlands in the country. Set out early morning or afternoon in search of one of Costa Rica’s most popular animals, the simply adorable, slow-moving, tree-dwelling sloth. This private guided, half day tour will allow you to observe the two and three fingered sloths in their natural habitat. Additionally, you may also see multicoloured toucans, poison dart frogs, iguanas and monkeys.
Transfer by road the 47km to Tenorio and its protected National Park. On arrival settle in to your hotel for the next two nights.
