As Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean it’s difficult to see everything in a week. Our eight day self-drive itinerary acquaints you with all the highlights of Sicily’s east coast: Taormina, the Sicilian islands and Syracuse.

Highlight of the trip

Taste Sicily’s delicious culinary offering of Arancini. A staple of Sicilian cuisine, Arancini is made of rice coated with breadcrumbs, which are then deep fried. Travelling around the island the fillings change depending on what fresh ingredients are readily available. Discover tantalising ragu, peas and mozzarella, enticing chicken liver and delectable tomato and mozzarella.

East Coast Itinerary:


Day 1– Flying from the UK to Catania, Sicily

Fly into Catania airport and collect your hire car. Enjoy 3 nights accommodation in the five star Metropole Hotel Taormina

Day 2 – Taormina

A full day tour of the town of Taormina, the hillside village of Castelmola, the coast of Giardini Naxos and the beautiful island of Isola Bella.

Day 3 – Mount Etna

Visit the lush landscapes of Mount Etna and enjoy a typical Sicilian lunch and wine tasting.

Day 4 – Stromboli & Panarea

Take in the volcanic islands of Stromboli and Panarea, famous for active lava flows and prehistoric villages, en route to Syracuse. Enjoy 4 nights accommodation in the five star Ortea Palace Luxury Hotel

Day 5 – Syracuse

Familiarise yourself with the historic Greek and Roman city of Syracuse with this walking tour where the emphasis also falls on the history and food and wine of the region.

Day 6 – Ortigia, Noto and Catania

Delve into ancient history, wander narrow streets and marvel at exquisite Baroque architecture in Ortigia, Noto and Catania.

Day 7 – Valley of the Temples

Discover ancient Greek civilisation in the Valley of the Temples and the Roman richness of the Villa Romana del Casale in Armerina and Agrigento.

Day 8 – Return to the UK 

Drive to Catania airport to drop off your hire car, and for your return flight.

  • Avoid driving in Zona Traffico Limitato (ZTL). These are usually located in the old centres of most Italian towns and cities, and are designed to limit congestion. Driving in ZTL areas will incur a fine. Look out for the sign, a red circle with a white centre.
  • Keep a little cash in the car for toll booths and fuel.
  • When filling up at a petrol station it is worth paying a little extra for an attendant to do it for you.
  • Handy phrases to know: Benzina: Petrol, Senza Piombo: Unleaded Petrol and Diesel: Diesel
  • Parking: Blue lines on the street indicate pay and display, white lines indicate free parking but look out for adjacent signs indicating time restrictions and avoid parking on yellow lines.
