  • Overview

Puntarenas is the name given to the largest province of Costa Rica which covers most of the country’s Pacific Ocean coast. It borders Guancaste to the north and Panama in the south and includes the Isla del Coco, some 300 miles offshore. Slower to develop than some other parts of Costa Rica, part of the charm of the Puntarenas region is to be found in its many secluded beaches, conservation areas, inlets, islands and natural treasures. The climate is at its driest and warmest from December to April when pleasing, cool breezes sweep off the Pacific. The Monteverde area, to the north of the province, is renowned for its protected cloud forest reservations, which offers a safe haven to many rare species of frogs, butterflies animals and plants. Hiking trails and canopy tours here, are a delight. Puntarenas is also home to a number of impressive waterfalls including those of the Pura Vida Garden.

The province’s administrative capital, also called Puntarenas, sits on a narrow and long peninsular which stretches out into the Gulf of Nicoya. It’s a characterful working town and an important cargo, pleasure and fishing port, with a busy ferry terminal. It’s also the closest coastal escape from Costa Rica’s capital city, San Jose. Seafood here is supremely fresh, and the Paseo de Los Turistas is the place to sample it, along with local art and culture, parades and concerts.
