  • Overview

Modest, charming and unassuming, Cordoba today belies its history and past. Now a prosperous, riverfront, provincial capital, it was once the largest city of Roman Spain and the greatest medieval caliphate of the Moors; for more than three hundred years it was the very heart of the western Islamic empire.

Arguably the most beautiful and grandest mosque ever built by the Moors in Spain, Cordoba is home to the Mezquita, a wonderfully preserved symbol of the Islamic culture which flourished here more than a thousand years ago.

Other architectural highlights include the beautifully restored and pedestrianised Roman bridge, which spans the River Guadalquivir, and the many intricate and extravagant patios which are celebrated in their own festival during May.

The narrow streets and delightful authenticity of the Muslim and Jewish quarters give way to the more modern parts of the city around the Plaza de Las Tendillas, where there are lively bars and excellent restaurants.
