    The city of Castries itself is a fascinating place to explore, with a thrumming harbour, restaurants serving international fayre and numerous landmarks. Castries is the birthplace of two Nobel Prize winners and Derek Walcott Square honours one of them. The square is also home to the city’s impressive cathedral, the interior of which is decorated with a mural by celebrated St Lucian artist, Dunstan St. Omer, who also designed the national flag of St Lucia.

    Castries Central Market is an open-air shopping area filled with craft sellers, clothing and food – ideal for souvenir shopping and soaking up Castries culture. There’s an abundance of other shopping opportunities in Castries too, with boutiques, malls and duty free options all available.

    The region of Castries has been important militarily over the centuries, meaning there are a number of fascinating ruins to visit nowadays. La Toc Battery, Meadow’s Battery and Fort Charlotte atop Morne Fortune give an insight into St Lucia’s history as well as incredible views of the island.

    Castries enjoys an incredible stretch of coastline, with numerous sandy beaches, water sports and boating activities on offer. Vigie Beach is a white sandy beach with a relaxed ambience, while the two-mile long Malabar Beach offers yet more captivating views, scuba diving and a variety of water sports. La Toc Beach is another favourite, while the natural harbour of Marigot Bay further down the coastline is a picturesque resort surrounded by verdant hills. Inland, nature trails, rainforest hikes and fascinating plantation tours are all on offer.
