A self-drive discovery across Reunion Island

Andrew Farr

Reunion Island differs considerably to its neighbour Mauritius. A visit to Reunion Island involves being more active, adventurous and at one with nature. To discover the best of what this dramatic gem has to offer, Classic Collection has put together a five day self-drive touring itinerary so you can discover the island at your own pace. Visit areas of outstanding natural beauty, taking in some of Reunion Island’s most iconic natural sights: forests, waterfalls, volcanoes, mountain villages, geysers and lagoons.

Day 1

Arrive into Reunion Island to be met by an English-speaking representative at Roland Garros Airport. Once you’ve collected your car, take to the road to discover the verdant east coast, vanilla plantations, majestic waterfalls, rivers and ravines in the forest country near takamaka and see the spectacular Bridal Veil waterfall. Head onto Mare a Vieille Place, and spend two nights at 4* Sarana.

Day 2

Discover the Salaize area. Take in the Col des Boeufs viewpoint over the Cirque de Mafate, before driving to the unspoilt mountain settlement of Hell-Bourg. With its typical Creole, colourful buildings, it’s widely considered to be one the most beautiful villages on the island. Visit the traditional Folio House and its gardens. Return to Mare a Vieille Place.

Day 3

Visit the churches of Sainte Anne and Sainte Rose before seeing the gigantic lava flows of previous volcanic eruptions. Discover the magnificent coloured forests of Bébour and Bélouve. Explore the volcanic heart and island nation’s most scenic routes at Plaine des Sables and Pas de Bellecombe. Enjoy mesmerising views of volcanoes and craters, and go hiking on one of the world’s most active volcanoes, Piton de la Forunaise. Travel to St Leu via the picturesque village of Entre-Deux and spend two nights at 5* Relais & Chateaux Blue Margouillat.

Day 4

Head south towards St Louis and stop off at Cilaos, a forested village of hot springs and vineyards at the very foot of Reunion Island’s highest peak, Piton des Neiges. In the afternoon head to the salt lake, black sand beaches and geysers of the west coast visiting botanic gardens and sea turtles en route.

Day 5

Visit Piton Maido, one of the islands most beautiful viewing points. Enjoy a remarkable view over the Cirque of Mafate and the west coast of the island, lined with superb beaches. Pass by geranium farms on your way to the charming town St Paul where the Friday market brings in the crowds. Return to the airport for your flight back to the UK or add a few days on the beach at LUX St  Gilles.

The perfect prelude to a trip to Reunion Island is Maurtius, which is just a 45-minute flight away.
