  • Overview

This idyllic, sub-tropical destination is the oldest of the British Colonies to which many return year after year, a clear testimonial to Bermuda luxury holidays.

Just 22 miles long and 2 miles wide, glorious pink sand beaches, glistening turquoise waters, lush green foliage, manicured lawns and quaint pastel-coloured cottages, are the hallmarks of this tiny speck of land 1000 miles north of the Caribbean, 600 miles (2 hours flying time) east of the American coast, and only a 7 hour flight from the UK. Comprising 181 islands, islets and rocks, the eight largest islands are all linked by bridges and causeways, and it is easy to travel around thanks to a very good transport system of ferries, buses and taxis, or for the more adventurous, scooters are easy to hire and lots of fun. These fantastic attributes mean Bermuda holidays can be tailored to each visitor’s wants and needs. The island boasts a laid back, albeit sophisticated, atmosphere and Bermudians, proud of their beautiful island and renowned for their hospitality, greet visitors with warmth and sincere friendliness.

    A Little History

Bermuda has a fascinating history as Britain’s oldest colony. Dating back to 1615, the historic links are evidenced by the numerous charming colonial buildings dotted across the island, a range of old-style British pubs, and the delightful tradition of serving English-style afternoon tea is available in many hotels and restaurants.

    An Island Paradise

Exuding sophisticated hospitality and charm and wearing its colonial heritage on its sleeve, this sub-tropical island is no stranger to wealth which is self-evident in the high living standards and superb infrastructure. With an abundance of stunning scenery and glorious food, Bermuda holidays are the perfect island retreat. There are restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes and budgets from Bermudian dishes to international cuisine including Asian, Italian, Spanish, and Middle Eastern. Not surprisingly, English pub fare is also an important part of the culinary landscape.

    Island Cuisine

Premier local seafood epitomises Bermudian cuisine, not surprisingly given the waters that surround the island, although American influences ensure that succulent steak-lovers are also well-catered for. Fish chowder concocted from snapper or rockfish and served with sherry pepper sauce and rum is a local favourite as are spiny lobster, wahoo, shark hash, and codfish cakes with a pinch of curry. Fried fish fillets in a bun and fresh fish sandwiches provide a healthy riposte to fast food burgers, and traditional dishes also include Hoppin’ John (peas and rice), and Peas & Plenty (black-eyed peas aromatically cooked with onions, salt pork and rice). With the islands mixed heritage, we recommend embarking on a culinary adventure on your Bermuda Holidays. Fresh fruit including bananas, avocado and cassava, and peas, rice and red beans are customary accompaniments to many island dishes.

    Nightlife

There are informal wine bars and smart lounges for quiet romantic evenings, Old English style pubs serving draught beers and traditional fare, and bars with live entertainment. And for those wanting to dance on in to the wee small hours, there’s Cellar in the West End, Light in the East End and Pickled Onion in the City of Hamilton. Every Friday evening during the summer months, visitors and Bermudians together head for the hotels and bars offering happy hour drinks; often moving in unison from one happy hour venue to the next.

At Classic Collection Holidays we offer a fantastic and exclusive range of hotels in Bermuda. Ranging from enchanting romantic resorts to golf resorts and spas located across the isles.

I visited all our hotels and sampled numerous restaurants, enjoying inexpensive fare as well as world class international cuisine, and it’s now one of my top destinations; the beaches are amazing, the culture and history captivating and there’s a great mix of British and US cultures playing their own part in this efficiently run yet relaxing island.
